Snowshoeing Porcupine Mountains Lakeshore
January 23, 2023: Good Snow Depths are being reported all across the Lake Superior Region. Up to 26 inches of snow along the Minnesota North Shore, around 22 inches near Bayfield, 24 inches in Ironwood and the Keweenaw, and similar accumulations from Marquette to Sault Ste. Marie. Generally the greatest snow depths on the US side can be found from around Porcupine Mountains to the Keweenaw Peninsula.
For more detailed info see WEATHER CHANNEL & SNOW DEPTH LINKS further down this page.
With some sections of the UP receiving over 200 inches of snow, one can see how this is a winter wonderland for skiers, snowshoeing enthusiasts, and snowmobilers. With the milder winters we've been having in the upper midwest, going to Yooperland is your best chance at fun in the snow.
Some good early snowfalls so far this winter and more recently cold weather to ensure the snow stays put! That bodes well for the legendary Duluth to Grand Portage John Beargrease Sled Dog race along Minnesota's North Shore. There are good conditions from Duluth to Grand Marais and further north. Bayfield, Wisconsin also has decent snow cover so things look positive for their Apostle Islands Dog Sled race. And the cold weather will help make safe the trail to the Wisconsin Lake Superior Ice Caves.
Ontario, from Thunder Bay to Wawa has decent snow cover and snowmobile and x-c trails are open and in good condition. In Michigan's Upper Peninsula conditions are looking good from Ironwood and good from there through the Keweenaw and over to Marquette. Munising to Grand Marais to Sault Sainte Marie has had some good snowfalls. The previous winter I had double knee replacements over the winter but did manage to get north to do some snowshoeing on trails in Munising and Jo and I caught the UP 200 Sled Dog Race in Marquette, which was really a fun event seeing the start of the race in downtown Marquette and the finish in the harbor park.
