Ontario Travel: Hiking, Camping, Waterfalls, things to do and see on the Lake Superior Circle Route

The West to East circle tour route leaves Minnesota to enter Canada at Grand Portage.
Through the summers of 2003 through August 2006, the border crossing routine seemed no more complex than prior to 9/11. Have never encountered long wait lines here. (We have, however, encountered long lines at the eastern Soo bridge border crossing during weekends and holidays).
I recommend a stop at the Ontario Visitor Center. Very helpful staff, loads of maps and brochures and clean washrooms! There is also a currency exchange there but it is not open all the hours of the visitor center, so don't put all your eggs in that basket. Actually most places in Canada take credit cards, so you'll not need a lot of actual Canadian money to get by. If you missed the hike to High Falls on the American side, there is a hiking trail leading from the Visitor Center to view it from the other side.
After leaving the Visitor Center, the highway climbs into the hills and away from Lake Superior. Eventually the terrain levels out and looks quite a lot like central Wisconsin - with glacial drumlins punctuating the otherwise flat landscape. Dairy and beef farms, Amish buggies and cheese factories complete the parallel. Quite a change from the rugged shorelines and heavily wooded landscape of Minnesota's North Shore.
But once past Thunder Bay, the rocky outcroppings and mountain-like hills return. A side trip to visit the Sibley Peninsula and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park can easily occupy a few days due to its numerous hiking trails as well as canoeing and fishing on secluded inland lakes.
