Wyandotte Hills Golf Course Review
We discovered this little jewel of a course on the Internet and put it on our travel itinerary for our 2008 fall color tour on the Western Upper Peninsula. Located in Twin Lakes, about 25 miles south of Houghton, MI, Wyandotte Hills is a very convenient stop for golfers doing the Lake Superior Circle Tour or visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is also a resort with 4 cabins for rent and offers "stay and play" packages. They also have electric hookups for RVs.
The course, supper club, and resort is managed and maintained by the Kratt family - Greg and Christie and mom Betty. The course shows the kind of attention to detail in both layout and maintenance one might expect from a family owned and managed operation. While it is a few miles from Lake Superior, its scenery is outstanding - particularly in the fall.
Dan and I played the course in the last week of September 2008. We found the fairways in excellent condition and the greens likewise. It was overcast when we began play and a drizzling rain started up part way through our game, but we still had a very enjoyable round of golf. Overall the course is shorter than many (2663 yards for 9 holes) yet it isn't necessarily an easy course. Woods and water add challenge, yet the layout was fair - very playable. We don't have a slope rating for the course but my guess is it would be average or a little tougher than average. Our favorite hole was #8, a par 4 dog leg right with two water hazards to negotiate.
Wyandotte Hills is a very good golfing value. The nine hole green fee is $17 and playing 18 will only cost you $22. The course is quite scenic, has lots of interesting touches, sufficiently challenging, yet quite playable. The club house has a small bar and a larger dining room-supper club with a more extensive menu, including a Friday night Lake Trout fish fry, than most golf courses. I have a feeling Grandma Betty's home cooking brings a number of locals to the club just for the eats. The golf carts were in good condition and the pro shop is modest but carries the essentials.
