Pictured Rocks Golf Course Review
Dan and I played Pictured Rocks in mid-September 2010. Overall a nice facility. Well maintained greens and fairways. The course layout includes both open and woods-lined fairways and the fairways were bent grass, an unexpected plus for a modest priced facility. Mostly level terrain. The monuments at each tee box were easy to read with larger print and a nicely executed diagram of the hole layout. The score card also had larger print and easy-to-read diagrams of each hole layout. Both of these are nice touches particularly for someone who is knew to the course.
Other features. Yardage is marked on the sprinkler heads and they were easy to find. Water hazards come into play on two holes and several holes had sand traps but only a few presented serious hazards. The white tees register 6007 yards and a slope of 119; the Blue tees are slightly longer (6246 yards, slope 124). We found the course very playable and well laid out. The main challenges were two long Par 5's and another Par 5 with 4 sand traps. The course is a little easier than the slope and yardage would indicate because of the two long Par 5's.
The Pro Shop had all the essentials; the carts were older but serviceable. There was a bar and a restaurant but it was not staffed on the fall mid-week day we were there. They were just beginning to aireate the greens so we had to play around maintenance personnel on the front 9. The fall price was a very reasonable $25 for green and cart fee. A can of beer was also reasonably priced: $2.50. Overall we’d rate Pictured Rock course a good value for the money. Well-maintained, attention to details, reasonably scenic course, very playable, and an affordable price.
Fall 2016 Update - We found the course quite similar to our earlier visit. Fairways and greens were in good condition. Since our initial visit they've added Gold Tees (for Seniors) between the White and Red Tees and it looks like they moved the Red Tees up a few yards to shorten the length for the Ladies Tees. The carts remain old and well-used, but still functional and in good condition. The greens, while in good condition were clearly slower than normal. No nasty pin placements. Sand traps were in reasonable shape; somewhat hard but there had been lots of rain recently.
Overall impression. Very playable course, nicely laid out, well-maintained, and somewhat scenic. Low handicap golfers may find it lacks sufficient challenge and variety but there is little else to criticize. And the price is appropriate.
We played on a fall Sunday where they were advertising a 2 for 1 green fee special so the Green Fee + Cart was $28.00 - decent for a weekend fee. Unfortunately no food service other than packaged snacks in the bar. After labor day, they usually shut down their grill.
