NMU Golf Course Review
Formerly known as Chocolay Downs Golf Course, Northern Michigan University purchased the course in 2009. We liked the layout of the course, moderate challenge and very playable. Fairways were tight and somewhat rolling but in very good condition (especially for a moderately priced golf course). Greens generally were in good condition although a few greens were slow due to them not being recently cut. Main hazards were the woods and tight fairways. The course offered minimal use of tricky sand traps and water hazards. We added a little challenge by playing the Blue Tees at 6339 yards. Course scenery was average - pine woods, relatively flat, few dramatic terrain changes. Although close to Lake Superior the terrain offered no views of the lake. The course was well-groomed and cart paths well maintained so the overall aesthetic impression is positive.
The Pro Shop/Club House is modest - offering only bare necessities (and no beer). There was a putting and chipping green. I didn't notice a driving range but the website says there is one. Given its good condition, layout, and reasonable green and cart fees it is an exceptional golfing value. It was a fun to play and we would play it again. We also suspect there will be further enhancements to the course and club house/pro shop facilities under NMU ownership.
