Lester Park Golf Course Review

Located on the northeast edge of Duluth, Minnesota near the Lester River, Lester Park is a 27 hole championship course overlooking Lake Superior. Its a mature city owned facility originally constructed as an 18 hole course in 1934. The course has been re-designed several times and most recently another 9 holes added. A number of holes feature elevation changes and narrow fairways lined with woods. A scenic and challenging course with 20 of the 27 holes offering views of Lake Superior. One challenge golfers encounter at Lester Park is due to Lake Superior. We've been told by some area residents that the grass on the greens "lean" toward the lake so putts tend to break towards the lake and putts away from the lake require a little extra horsepower!

Two years ago we played the Lake Nine. Most recently (June 2009), we played the Front and Back Nines. The main course has some challenge (slope rating 118 & 125) but is not gimmicky - an average golfer has a chance to score at least his/her average on most holes. Our "Lost Ball Index" for the front and back nines would be modest; there's an adequate amount of playable rough lining most fairways. The greens were tricky, whether this was because of the alleged "lake effect" or we just had trouble reading them well. There was some deterioration in the fairways due to last summer's severe drought and perhaps some winter kill, but maintenance workers were evident all over the course doing repairs and watering. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon of golf. From what I recall of the Lake Nine, its fairways were narrower and some more dramatic elevation changes. More challenging (slope rating 144) and a higher than average Lost Ball Index. Also very scenic.

Lester Park offers a decent golfing value, a quality course yet under $31 for 18 holes. Also senior and junior discounts, mid-week rates. The club house dates back to the 1930s and is showing some signs of age yet it is clean and adequate; it offers a snack bar, locker rooms, and a pro shop. There's also a driving range, chipping green, and putting green . . . plus golf instruction.
