Golf Course Rating
Bayfield, Wisconsin's Apostle Highlands course is both scenic and challenging, but not so tough that the high handicap player can't have an enjoyable round of golf. Its elevation above Lake Superior allow most holes a view of Chequamegon Bay and Madeline Island and the breeze off the lake is welcome on a hot day.
Most fairways are wooded on both sides. That fact and several creeks, ravines, and ponds contribute to a higher than average Lost Ball Index (yet these same features add challenge and scenic value). Do to the frequent change in elevation, golfers walking the course will get their exercise! We've found the greens and fairways well maintained and adequately surviving periods of light rainfall. The facility is family owned and operated and shows evidence of attention to detail one would expect from the owners being on-site. My most challenging hole: #12, a 517 yard downhill double dogleg run, with the fairway sloping right towards a ravine. Guaranteed trouble for a slice or push!
The club house is modest but clean and comfortable with a nice view of the course. Food and beverage service is limited to snacks and microwave-convenience foods. The pro shop is also modest, offering rentals and some golfing accessories. The riding golf carts were in good condition. Prime time green fees place it in the moderate price range, but there are discounts for twilight golfing Sunday thru Thursday.
