Fall golfing at Kweenaw Lodge Golf Club - Copper Harbor, Michigan
Keweenaw Golf Course Review
A very scenic 9 hole course built into the side of a mountain during the 1930s as part of Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration. A beautiful log lodge, pro shop and 24 cabins complement the facility. The log architecture, lodge atmosphere and its supper club menu draws visitors from across the upper Keweenaw. It is located a few miles south of Copper Harbor along US 41.
We played the golf course in the fall of 2008 on a cloudy, cold day with occasional drizzling rain. So our pictures don't portray the scenery in the best light. The wooded course offers variety and challenge. It is rated as a par 36 course (3120 yards blue tees); it does not post a slope rating for the course but my guess is it would be a little tougher than average. The fairways were often quite undulating - reminiscent of a mogul field in a ski run with occasional deep pockets between the moguls where the grass was too long to be adequately trimmed by the mower. So a well placed shot will sometimes, due to the luck of the draw, result in a challenging lie. And if your ball leaves the fairway, beware. The rough is rough - bare ground and roots. Yet despite these limitations the course was quite playable and entertaining . . . and as noted very scenic. Favorite hole: #6, a relatively short par 4 with water in front of the green.
Keweenaw Lodge is a good golfing value for 18 holes. The nine hole green fee is $19 and playing 18 will cost you $26. Members of the Upper Peninsula Golf Association earn a discount on green fees. The restaurant-lodge serves as the club house and the large supper club has an extensive menu. The golf carts were in good condition, the pro shop was closed during our stay so we just gave it an average rating.
