INTJs favor Backpacking as much or more than as Day Hiking. One person commented that "I prefer to do things for long periods of time, not really intrested in quickies" as her explaination for preferring overnight backpacking and overnight canoe tripping.

This sample of INTJs were as likely to choose Kayaking as Canoeing for their means of on-water recreation and transport.

Another mentioned the "challenge" and the "escape" as key attractors: "The more challanging the more likely it is to be fun! Example: 20 mile bike ride is merely a warm-up. A bike ride? More like 250 miles. Backpacking? No less than 20 miles in. Too close to civilzation other wise." Another echoed this attraction by listing "Survival camping - with little provisions and shelter" as among his passions.

The notion of INTJs being drawn to physical challenges reminds me of a factoid I once gathered (Sorry can't recall the source) that in a personality survey of 16 marathon runners, 15 ID'd as INTJ.

~~~~~~~
Some other outdoor interests mentioned by INTJs completing this survey were: "Running(2)"," Horseback Riding", "Hunting/Shooting (2)", "SCUBA/Snorkeling" "Sky Diving" Fishing (2)"," cross-country skiing (3)"," gardening" "climbing-rappelling (2) ","camping (2)" "Mtn Biking (2) " "Road Biking (4)" "swimming" "skating" and "Studying ecosystems in the field" - [:-)].
This group volunteered a greater number of "other" enjoyed outdoor recreational activities than most of the other type groups.
Compared to their INTJ cousins, INFJs are slightly more likely to prefer "day hiking" over "overnight backpacking" but are active enthusiasts of the latter as well.
The choices of other enjoyed activities suggest they share a similar attraction to more physically challenging outdoor activities (mountain & rock climbing, mtn biking ) - yet the text of the comments seem not to emphasize the rigor of some of the INTJ comments.
They are also more likely to choose a canoe over a kayak.
~~~~~~

Other enjoyable outdoor pursuits included: mountaineering(2), rock climbing (3), cycling; cross country skiing (2), watching football games, walking (3), bike riding (3), beach combing (2), downhill skiing, camping (2), mountain biking (2), sailing, ,jogging, general woods/streams exploring, birdwatching, and photography (2). A mixture of active and leisurely pursuits.

In comparison to INTJs, they also favored more leisurely pursuits (i.e. birdwatching, photography, beach combing, and walking).
