Madeline Island Golf Course Review
Just a few miles across the water from Bayfield, Wisconsin Madeline Island Golf Club makes the tongue-in-cheek claim that " . . . every green is an island green." Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the Scottish links-style course offers an unusual golfing experience. Several holes share large double greens, some holes share part of a fairway, some holes share a tee box, and two holes are a more conventional design. From the blue tees the course is fairly challenging, earning a slope rating of 131 on 6332 yards.
The first four holes of each nine feature relatively open but rolling fairways. The other holes are wooded and some with rather tight fairways. Some elevated greens add challenge, some greens are well guarded by sand traps, and a few ponds and marshes will steal your ball (as will the woods unless you hit is straight and sometimes not too long). I found the fairways were in average condition for Lake Superior courses; the greens were in excellent shape and by-the-way due to their size will make avoiding 3 putts more difficult!. During my visit in early August 2009, I was able to walk the course but I did not play it as my golfing partner Dan wasn't with me. So our ratings are provisional. We will update them when we get a chance to play the course in 2010 and we'll also update the ratings when we hear from golfers who have played this course.
The driving range is quite nice with an elevated tee area and close to the clubhouse. The club house is comfortable and has an attractive scenic view of the Madeline Island harbor. Pro shop staff were attentive and helpful. Green fees are higher than average ($60 for 18) compared to most other courses around Lake Superior but junior golfers get a very attractive discount (no discount for seniors though). Cart fees are reasonable. One could argue that the unusual course layout and its Apostle Islands location qualifies this as an "experience" golf course worth the higher green fees.
