Enger Park Golf Course - Duluth, Minnesota |
Enger Golf Course Review
Enger is Duluth's "golden oldie" golf course; the 18 hole course opened in the 1920s. More recently an additional 9 was added bringing the total holes to 27. Like its sister Duluth golf course, Lester Park GC, it is a city owned facility.
Situated on the top of Duluth's bluff, behind the famous Enger Park Tower, it benefits from the moderate temperatures from Lake Superior but offers only an occasional lake view. Yet a number of holes offer quite scenic views. Unfortunately a few otherwise attractive vistas were marred by highline wires and radio towers (added to the landscape long after the Enger course was created - the cost of technological progress! ). Of the three public golf courses in the Duluth-Superior area (the other two are Lester Park and Superior's Nemadji Golf Course), this is Dan's favorite.
Most recently (June 2009), we played the Front and Back Nines. The main course has some challenge (slope rating 136 & 133) and is a little tougher than Lester's Front and Back Nines. But like Lester's course the challenges are not gimmicky - an average golfer has a chance to score at least his/her average on most holes. Our "Lost Ball Index" for the front and back nines is about average; there's an adequate amount of playable rough lining most fairways and the rough on a number of holes slopes towards the fairways instead of into the woods. The greens were a little slower than Lester's and not quite as tricky. The fairways were average condition, with some deterioration due to last summer's severe drought and perhaps some winter kill, but I expect it to improve as the temperatures warm. We didn't nominate an outstanding hole, but Dan had a least-favorite: the #10 hole had a hidden water hazard that gobbled up what he thought was a terrific fairway shot heading straight for the green! Other than that one, all of the holes were enjoyable challenges. We didn't play the Middle Nine. It appears to have more water hazards and it has a higher slope rating (142) so I suspect it is more challenging and I'll lose a few balls when I play it!
Enger Park offers a decent golfing value, a quality course yet under $31 for 18 holes. Also senior and junior discounts, mid-week rates. The club house dates back to the 1930s and is showing some signs of age yet it is clean and adequate; it offers a snack bar, locker rooms, and a pro shop. There's also a driving range, chipping green, and putting green . . . plus golf instruction.
